内容简介：

Matthew Arnold(1822-88) is better known for his prose than for his poetry that has been criticized for a lack of rhyming regularity and generality. This paper will defend Arnold's poetic skills through a discussion of two of his shorter poems To Marguerite -Continued and Dover Beach. Emphasis will be placed upon their poetic qualities using formalist readings, intertextuality, and the poems’ historical and biographical context. If time allows, in order to display the difference between mid-Victorian and mid-twentieth century sensibility, there will be a discussion of Anthony Hecht's 1950's parody of Arnold's Dover Beach-The Dover Bitch.
